Diesel saving drivers money

Car buyers could save money by purchasing a diesel model, according to a new report.

Research by Auto Express reveals that the average motorist could save almost £9,000 in the long-term by switching from standard petrol to diesel.

Diesel cars are usually regarded as advantageous for high-mileage drivers; however, the study suggests that substantial savings could be made by average distance motorists.

For example, the 1.4 TDCi Zetec Ford Fiesta initially costs around £900 more than the standard 1.25 Zetec petrol version, but drivers covering 12,000 miles per year may save around £828 on running costs after the first three years of ownership.

David Williams, from fleet sales value calculator Carcost, speaking to Auto Express added: "Most people think diesels only make sense for high-mileage drivers, but the majority would be better off going for derv."

"Because diesels are more economical and depreciate less, the cost of ownership is usually much lower than a petrol."
