Ford to push diesel in the US market
Ford is currently working on a diesel engine for its high-end US offerings, according to 4Car.
Petrol remains king in the States where gas-guzzling SUVs and other large cars are all the rage.
However, Ford is hoping to change the perceptions of a nation by introducing a high performance, high torque, 3.6-litre diesel option that is based on the 2.7 V6 that is currently offered in Jaguars and Land Rovers in Europe.
The new power plant has apparently been earmarked for use in the Land Rover Discovery, the Range Rover Sport and a number of Jaguars, while Volvo is reportedly in talks with Ford over using the engine in the XC90 and S80.
For US drivers who simply will not entertain the idea of a diesel, Ford is also working on a petrol-electric hybrid option.
Also in production for the US and European markets are a V8 option for the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery as well as a 3.0-litre V6 diesel to replace the current 2.7.
There are even rumours of a 4.4-litre Ford V8 for the ever expanding US pick-up market. But then what else would one expect from the land where bigger is always better.
