Renault makes new diesel offering

Renault has released a new 2.0-litre diesel engine that promises improved performance and fuel consumption.

The 2.0 dCi replaces the existing 2.2-litre power plant and according to the manufacturer it delivers the same 150bhp, but reduces fuel consumption from 48.7mpg to 43.4mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions also fall by 20g/km to 154.

Installed in new Laguna the first 60mph of acceleration is dealt with in just under nine seconds, while AutoExpress reports that the reduced weight of the unit improves the grip and handling. All this from a family car that is ultimately designed for ride comfort and safety.

The new engine will debut in the Renault Laguna but should be available across the range next year when a more powerful 175bhp option will join the line-up.

Also on offer is a new version of the 1.9dCi engine which, according to AutoExpress, offers excellent value for money and refinement but lacks the mid-range performance of the new 2.0-litre.

Renault has announced that the new 2.0dCi will go on sale immediately, while the existing 2.2 will be phased out into 2006.

With the price of fuel rising inexorably over the last 18 months diesel options and fuel consumption are becoming increasingly important and Renault is hoping that the increased efficiency of its new offering will appeal to a range of drivers.
