Holidaymakers 'staying in Britain'

Cash-strapped British travel fans are looking closer to home for holiday inspiration this year, it has emerged.

New research carried out by caravan group Haven Holidays highlighted the growing number of families opting for British resorts in favour of foreign trips away.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the worsened euro exchange rate and credit crunch-induced economic woes are the main reasons for the trend.

"The low pound against the euro has made going abroad more expensive and the credit crunch means people are also looking to get good value, perhaps nearer to home, again to save on travel costs," a spokesperson for the caravan park firm explained to the newspaper.

Bookings for caravan holidays have shown a 30 per cent rise for June and July compared with the same time last year, the representative added. In its own weekend analysis of this year's money-saving summer options, the Sunday Times recommended vintage caravan trips.

American-style "retro but comfy" vehicles lend a classy edge to the experience, according to the publication.
