Caravan owners advised to be alert
Police have warned caravan owners to be on their guard following another high-profile theft in Scotland.
Approximately 3,000 caravans are reported stolen in the UK annually, with more than a quarter never recovered.
This latest incident, in Forfar, Angus, saw thieves take off with a five-berth vehicle worth £3,600 from a caravan park.
Constable Derek Mitchell, crime reduction officer at Forfar told the Kirrie Muir Herald: "Owners should check their security measures to ensure they are adequate. Locking the caravan coupling head into a cover using a good quality hitchlock and fitting locking wheel nuts can be good deterrent."
He also advised keeping windows and doors closed and removing valuables from display.
Using a permanent marker pen to label the caravan in secret places can also help identify stolen vehicles quicker.
Caravan trade can be a lucrative business for thieves. Vehicle dealership Discover Leisure estimates the current value of the UK caravan, motorhome and camping sector to be more than £1.6 billion a year.
