Police offer tips for caravan safety

With the improved weather tentatively suggesting that summer may have arrived, the police are providing caravan towers with advice on setting out on a safe and secure touring season.

As holidaymakers check their caravan insurance, pull the trailers out of storage and get set for the road, the service is reminding them of the risks posed by unwanted intruders.

Doncaster police advise owners to purchase a ground anchor on the caravan's hard standing, allowing it to be locked in place with a heavy-duty chain or bar when vacated.

Furthermore, to lessen the risk of having to make a caravan insurance claim. owners are advised to fit a reliable alarm and ensure roof lights and windows are closed to deter intruders.

It adds that manufacturers have already taken pains to improve the security of such vehicles: "National Caravan Council recognised manufacturers have stamped the 17 digit vehicle identification number (VIN) onto the vehicle chassis and etched it into the windows."

Dorset police service has previously released similar advice, suggesting that owners mark all property contained in the caravan with a postcode or other unique number, as well as requesting that owners take all valuables with them when leaving the caravan unattended.
