AA: 10% more caravans vanish in the Midlands
Caravan owners in the Midlands should be particularly vigilant and ensure they have adequate caravan insurance as recent research has found that ten per cent more vanish in this region than any other in the UK.
It is estimated that approximately 4,000 caravans are stolen each year in Britain, according to the AA.
They report that a popular tactic among thieves is to wait for owners to have one last cup of tea or to stop in motorway service stations before making their move.
Organised gangs of this sort know what they are looking for and often target high end caravans which will fetch a good price when sold on.
Simon Douglas, head of AA caravan insurance, commented: "Caravanning is increasing in popularity and we're seeing more caravans being stolen to order, especially larger, luxury twin-axle models."
He added that around three-quarters of those stolen are never found again.
Figures from 2004 estimated around half a million caravans were in the UK, yet identifying them is particularly difficult as manufacturers produce about 600 models each year, according to the Home Office.
