Caravan tyre check is 'vital'
A large number of caravan owners will take to the road this summer without having first checked that their mobile home is safe to be towed.
According to Protyre, one of the country's largest tyre specialists, approximately two million Britons will embark on a caravan holiday without first carrying out the proper safety checks.
The firm has warned that while most caravans are only used once or twice a year, tyre pressure and tread still need to be checked before the start of any trip.
Protyre noted that tyres which aren't used for long periods of time can suffer from general deterioration and ozone cracking.
It advised owners of trailer caravans which have tyres that are more than seven years old should think about having them replaced.
The Camping and Caravanning Club agreed with Protyre's stance on the need for tyre awareness among caravanners.
Barry Norris, technical information officer, said: "Tyres are a major factor in caravan safety and the Club encourages caravanners to check their tyres regularly and not to forget that age deterioration can be a real problem."
Earlier this year, the Highways Agency launched a new DVD entitled Fit to Tow, aimed at encouraging safety awareness among caravan and trailer owners.
