'It is important to check caravan tyres this summer'
People looking to head out for a caravan holiday this summer should make sure that their vehicles are prepared for the road, a vehicle industry source has claimed.
Tyre specialist Protyre has remarked that around two million drivers in the UK will not carry out even basic checks on their motor homes before they tow them this summer.
It may be that such negligence has a serious effect on a caravan insurance policy, as an accident could see their premiums become compromised.
Wheels which are more than seven year old should be changed for new ones - even if their tyre tread meets the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm.
Barry Norris, technical information officer of the Camping and Caravanning Club, believes vehicles should be checked as often as possible.
"Tyres are a major factor in caravan safety and the club encourages caravanners to check their tyres regularly and not to forget that age deterioration can be a real problem," he said.
As much as £1 billion per year could be being wasted by motorists not maintaining their tyres, according to research from Cooper Tyre Europe.
