London emissions zone to extend to caravans
London's Low Emission Zone will be expanded in the next four years in order to incorporate caravans.
On Monday, the second phase of the system began, covering coaches and buses, as well as lorries weighing more than 3.5 tonnes.
They will now have to pay a £200 daily charge in order to travel through the area if they do not meet the required Euro III standard.
When the next phase begins in the next four years, caravans between 2.5 tonnes and 3.5 tonnes will be liable for the charge.
This bill could prove to be particularly difficult to pay for those already paying high caravan insurance policy prices. Similarly, some cover firms may choose against paying out if they feel a caravan represents a risk.
According to London mayor Boris Johnson, low air quality caused by vehicles in the city is "simply not acceptable".
He said: "I urge the owners of any vehicles affected by phase two, that do not yet meet the emissions standard, to take action now to play their part in making London cleaner and greener."
In May Boris Johnson came into power, defeating previous London mayor Ken Livingstone.
