Essex caravan safety initiative 'first of its kind'
A caravan safety initiative set up by firefighters in Essex is thought to be the first of its kind, it has been reported.
The Gazette has stated that the Clacton fire station's red watch has been given the task of conducting the checks on more than 9,000 pitches in the area.
It may be that this comes as a relief to caravan owners, as they may now save on their caravan insurance policies as a result of the tests.
This week the checks started at Highfield Grange Holiday Park and will take place at Seawick Holiday Village, Valley Farm and Pump Hill caravan sites before the end of the year.
"We have a lot of people coming here for holidays and people living on the sites, but we have nothing in place for giving fire safety advice," commented subofficer Dave Whittel.
He added that the body is "now treating the residential mobile homes as domestic properties, so they will be entitled to free fire safety visits if they want it".
Last month the Health and Safety Executive launched a safety inspection programme at caravan sites across North Wales, according to the Daily Post.
