Development of caravan site in AONB denied

Proposals for a £3 million development of a caravan site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) have been refused planning permission.

Berwick borough council voted against the scheme which would have seen the erection of 58 wooden chalets and a 36-bed bunkhouse at Buddle Bay Camping and Caravan Site.

The owner of the site hoped to open it all year round rather than just seasonally, but went to lengths to assuage the doubts of some locals and councillors, reports the Berwick Advertiser .

Despite this, there remained concerns that any development would have a damaging effect on the character of the area and that permanent chalets may lead to other problems.

Councillor Richard Patterson stated: "I would hate to see them sold off as low-cost housing and create permanent residences and I think it could set a precedent for other site operators and I support the proposal to refuse permission."

Holidaymakers considering stopping to take in the area's natural beauty should ensure that they have caravan insurance before taking off on their journey.

In related news, the conversion of a seasonal caravan park in Dornoch into a year-round residential site appears to be underway, reports the Northern Times.
