Green belt caravan site allowed to build stables

A caravan site on green belt land has been given the go ahead to build two stables for donkeys.

It was decided by the local council's planning committee ruled that the proposals to construct the shelters and a tack room did not contravene any policies, despite concerns over the development voiced by residents and councillors, reports the Woodford Guardian.

The site had been advised to build housing for the animals by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after donkeys escaped and caused havoc on nearby roads. Approval was given with the added proviso that the council was informed how the excrement was to be disposed of.

The reluctance of the some representatives to grant permission for the development was articulated by Labour councillor Margaret Broadley. She said: "I feel that our presence here is superficial … This was green belt land and now it bears no resemblance to green belt land. But we have no planning grounds to turn it down."

In related news, a garden centre in Burnley has applied for permission to convert vacant land into a caravan site, reports the Lancashire Telegraph. Holidaymakers considering renting a pitch should ensure that they have taken out suitable caravan insurance.
