Abandoned caravan set ablaze

An abandoned caravan in a Cheshire cul-de-sac was set alight in a suspected arson attack on July 21st.

Firefighters were called to tackle the blaze in the caravan which also contained around 20 tyres, reports the Chester Chronicle. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene along with nine officers, who used hose reels to battle the flames and dense black smoke issuing from the tyres. The local council had been aware that the caravan had been dumped for over four days but had not removed it.

Mike McGivern, a spokesman for Chester city council, stated: "The council is treating it as a fly-tipping incident and as such we needed to gather evidence before serving a notice on the vehicle, which would have been removed this week in any event." No one was hurt in the incident but the police are treating the case as arson. In related news, two caravans at a caravan park near Taunton were destroyed in an arson attack that also caused 80 per cent damage to a transit van, reports the Somerset County Gazette.

Owners of caravans should ensure that they take out suitable caravan insurance to cover them in the event of a fire.
