Audi introduces multitronic diesel transmission

Audi has announced the introduction of its Multitronic CVT transmission to some turbo diesel models.

The German manufacturer has said the revolutionary transmission system will be fitted on turbo diesels in its A6 range.

The multitronic system allows the gearbox to glide through gear ratios without the jumping that afflicts a number of automatic models.

Experts believe that the technology also allows acceleration from stationary to be far smoother than in comparative models.

The transmission has a number of different acceleration settings that can be accessed through use of the clutch.

For those who also like the idea of having a manual gearbox available, the system offers seven ratio holds which can be utilised through the gear lever or alternatively by a switch on the steering wheel.

The top range A6 2.7 TDI SE saloon is capable of a top speed of 140mph and has a combined economy rating of 37.7mpg.

The vehicle has a CO2 rating of 200g/km although the 2.0 TDI models contain particulate filters that improve their environmentally friendly rating still further.

Prices start at £26,725 for the 2.0 TDI SE saloon, rising to £30,115 for the 2.7 TDI SE Avant, which is aimed at the business market.
