Caravan park visitors receive safety advice from fire fighters

Holidaymakers attending the Golden Sands Caravan Park at Cresswell will be paid a visit by fire fighters from Ashington fire station on Wednesday August 6th.

The emergency service's officers will offer locals and vacationers alike advice on how to enjoy their summer breaks safely. Locals will be able to book free fire safety checks for their homes and have smoke alarms fitted without charge. In addition to this, members of the public will be able to ask questions about outdoor safety and barbeques.

Ian Woods, the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services White Watch manager, commented: "We hope to target people of all ages, including holidaymakers and local residents, and educate them about barbecue and outdoor fire safety. "Staff from the caravan park will also be on hand to give specific advice on caravan safety too."

The Northumberland fire and rescue service advises caravan owners never to leave a barbeque unattended and to make sure that ashes are emptied on to bare soil, not into a bin. Holidaymakers thinking of taking a caravan trip this summer should ensure that they have caravan insurance that covers them in the event of a fire. The Shropshire fire and rescue service recently reported that it receives up to 2,000 call-outs to fires in caravans or mobile homes each year.
