Caravan park near AONB gains approval to expand
A caravan park situated near an area of natural beauty (AONB) in Berwick has been given the go-ahead to expand by the local council. The move will see the addition of 48 static caravans to add to the existing 90 units, a reduction in the initial proposals that requested 65, reports the Berwick Advertiser.
Despite concern that some of the man-made screening mounds would compromise the AONB, it was pointed out that similar work had been done in an AONB at Warren Mill. Councillor Brian Douglas commented: "The caravan site makes a significant contribution to the local economy in attracting caravan owners to Berwick at a very competitive rate and the site helps sustain business to the Marshall Meadows Hotel."
He added that the farm on which the park is situated had been forced to diversify its operations to survive and noted that the clientele attracted to the site tended to be older holidaymakers, attracted by the tranquility and beauty of the area.
Visitors to caravan parks who take their own vehicles should ensure that they take out suitable caravan insurance to protect them against theft or accidents. In related news, the Berwickshire News recently reported that proposals to expand a Greenlaw caravan park by 150 static homes have been met with hostility by some residents, who fear it will have too high a cost on the landscape of the area.
