Caravan site residents launch campaign
Residents of a caravan site in Oxford have launched a campaign to get a pedestrian crossing set up to improve the safety of its residents, many of whom are elderly.
The Sandford-on-Thames park has around 100 mobile homes and 100 inhabitants, including the 80-yar-old parish councillor Hazel Hutton, who has to cross a road without a pedestrian crossing to get to the shops and other local amenities. Ms Hutton commented: "It is very dangerous. Many of us are older, some have mobility problems and one or two have wheelchairs. "When we try to cross the road we have traffic coming at us from all directions."
She added that while there was a 40 mph speed limit on the road, there were often cars racing down it at up to 70 mph. Ms Hutton complained that her community had been forgotten by road bosses at Oxfordshire county council. However, it is hoped that the development of 4000 houses nearby will prompt the council to listen to those living in the park.
In related news, the Berwick borough council has recently approved proposals to extend a caravan park on the Northumberland coastline near an area of natural beauty, reports the Berwick Advertiser. Vacationers thinking of staying in a holiday park should ensure that they take out suitable caravan insurance to protect them in the event of an accident or theft.
