Caravan owners in Essex have been hit by a night of arson attacks
Caravan owners in Essex have been hit by a night of arson attacks.
Police and fire crews were called out to attend three caravan fires in Mistley and Manningtree, and at least five cars were destroyed in the incidents.
While the owners of the vehicles involved may well have reason to be thankful for their caravan insurance policies, the incidents have nonetheless proved upsetting for them.
Frances Harris, who saw her family's four-berth caravan go up in flames, told the East Anglian Daily Times she could not believe what had happened.
"In a sleepy little place like this, where we have lived for 15 years, you just do not expect something like that," she said.
Ms Harris added that the "living nightmare" had been made worse by the fact they had only just returned from a break in Suffolk, so the caravan still contained some personal possessions of sentimental value, including her six-year-old son's birthday presents.
In addition to caravans and cars, fences, outbuildings and gardens were also damaged in the attacks.
A spokesman for Essex Fire Service admitted the series of incidents had caused real problems, telling the Gazette: "We were getting so many calls from the public we didn't know how big the problem was."
