Holidaymakers advised to make checks
Caravan owners heading to the Lake District on holiday have been advised to make some simple checks before they set off.
The recommendation came from the North West Traffic Officer Service (NWTSO), which is responsible for patrolling the motorways in Cumbria.
In addition to making certain their caravan insurance is up to date, holidaymakers should check that their cars and caravans are in a mechanically fit state to make the intended journey before hitting the road, the organisation said.
It also reminded motorists to ensure they have sufficient fuel, as more than 1,300 drivers had to call for help after running out of petrol on the north-west's motorways during the first six months of 2008.
Traffic officer Sarah Dodd explained: "Some of these breakdowns are simply because people are not realising that their weekly £10 top up is not taking them as far as it used to."
Motorists who run out of petrol on Cumbria's motorways risk being stranded for hours because of the large distances between junctions, she added.
The advice could be relevant to more people than usual this year, as tourist industry bodies have reported an increase in the number of people taking caravan and camping holidays in the Lake District.
