Protect the unexpected

Norwich Union has published its top claims of 2005, with damage blamed on everything from frozen squirrels and cattle to kebabs and potatoes.

Sally Leeman of Norwich Union said: "We see a lot of strange claims but we were surprised at how many involved animals and food."

With cheap car insurance available from several providers, the range of these claims show that cover can really be for the unexpected things in life.

The "weirdest" claim listed by Norwich Union was awarded to a frozen squirrel smashing a windscreen, but frozen kebabs and reindeers were also in the top ten, as well as four claims citing cattle for a claim.

Recent police figures show that car crime has declined in the UK, but these odd claims show that taking advantage of cheap car insurance can be rewarding not just against theft.

This month, the government announced new regulations that aim to decrease the number of claims through tougher sentences acting as a deterrent.

However, the new regulations are unlikely to deter to frozen animals or meat products.

As Ms Leeman said: "We can hardly tell drivers to beware of flying kebabs and frozen squirrels when they're on the roads, but this shows how important it is to be aware of what's going on around you at all times."
