Arson attack reported

Police are investigating an arson attack that destroyed a caravan and spread to nearby homes in Broadfield, Crawley.

A number of residents had to be evacuated when emergency services were called to the fire on Saturday morning.

The fire spread from the caravan and damaged a nearby home, prompting concern that gas cylinders located in the area could have caught fire, the Crawley Observer reports.

One local resident living in one of the affected house told the newspaper that they were "quite lucky" more damage had not be caused.

"We were asleep at the time so we think we've been quite lucky. I want to know who did this though," she remarked.

Three fire crews attended the scene and required breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze, which damaged approximately five per cent of an adjacent property's facia, a spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said.

A number of fires in recent weeks may have resulted in claims on caravan insurance.

Fire destroyed four caravans at the Senlec Wood Holiday Park in Catsfield over the weekend, the Rye and Battle Observer reports.

According to the newspaper, a further five caravans were damaged by the heat from the blaze.
