Caravan thefts cut by increased security measures

Increased security measures may help people from having to claim on their caravan insurance, it has been suggested.

Louise Wood, director of communications for the National Caravan Council, said caravans are "less of a target than they used to be".

Caravan thefts have fallen to fewer than 2,000 a year, Ms Wood explained.

Wheel clamps and hitch locks have often been "insufficient deterrents", but the 1992 Caravan Registration Scheme and the immobilisers fitted to some caravans have proven to be successful security measures, the expert asserted.

"Some insurance companies offer discounts when these security products are fitted; also some insurance companies specifically ask for CRiS [Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme] registration from those seeking a quotation," Ms Wood stated.

These measures have all had an impact on improving awareness of caravan crime, she added.

Caravan insurance customers may be interested to learn there are presently 500,000 touring caravans in the UK and 2,000 touring parks across the country.

Nearly two million British people choose to take touring caravan holidays every year and the National Caravan Council reports that sales of touring caravans, motor homes, caravan holiday homes and park homes increased in 2007.
