Calls for Yorkshire Day public holiday
Caravan insurance customers who enjoy holidaying in Yorkshire could soon benefit from an extra public holiday if a group of friends gets its wish.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reveals that a group of friends has set up a petition calling for Yorkshire Day to be made a public holiday in the county.
According to the newspaper, the group meets on August 1st each year to celebrate Yorkshire day and this year's celebrations inspired them to make the day an official holiday.
In its petition, it calls for Yorkshire Day to be made a public holiday for those residing in the former three ridings of Yorkshire and the City of York.
"The government appears to be in favour of an additional public holiday and also separate government for the English regions of which Yorkshire is one," the group said.
It added: "This is an early application on behalf of England's largest county."
People have six months to sign up to the petition on the prime minister's website.
Yorkshire continues to be a popular destination for caravan owners, with David Frank, president of Scarborough Hospitality Association, recently telling the Yorkshire Post that caravan site owners anticipated a five per cent to ten per cent rise in bookings this summer.
