Insurance industry cracks down on uninsured drivers

The insurance industry is working with the government to tackle the problem of uninsured drivers, it has been claimed.

Caravan insurance customers may be interested to learn that the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) is focusing on the problem, which has already resulted in hundreds of thousands of vehicles being taken off the road.

Lorraine Preston, communications assistant at the MIB, said that the police have had a "great deal of success" in addressing the issue and so far 350,000 uninsured vehicles have been taken off the country's roads.

However, the expert suggested that there could be "social" reasons why people do not take out insurance for their vehicles.

"Some people don't see uninsured driving for the crime that it is, and the police and the Motor Insurers' Bureau along with government are determined to change both the perceptions and behaviour of the uninsured, into those of honest motorists," she remarked.

Earlier this month, Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said people in certain areas of the country are put off buying insurance because it is "extremely expensive".

However, he said the authorities will catch those who break the law.
