Motorists warned about tyre risk
Motorists could be delaying replacing old tyres because of the financial pressures of the credit crunch, it has been claimed.
Caravan insurance customers may be among those that are putting themselves and others at risk by driving on worn or defective tyres.
According to Protyre, more than three-quarters of motorists visiting its outlets in the UK had at least one defective or worn tyre, more than last year.
Adrian Walsh, director of RoadSafe, said: "This research is worrying. Clearly drivers are delaying the replacement of worn tyres which is a false economy and will place drivers at greater risk of having an accident."
Protyre warned that those driving on defective tyres could potentially be fined up to £2,500 and receive points on their licence - something that could also result in higher insurance premiums.
Tyresafe recently urged caravanners to carry out a tyre check before they embark on their journeys.
Motorists ought to ensure that their tyres are inflated correctly, have the legally-required tread depth and they are in good condition.
"Tyres are the only component of a caravan to come into contact with the road, so are vital to its stability and safety," the company stated.
