Holidaymakers 'stay closer to home'
The credit crunch is prompting many people to consider taking holidays in the UK, according to one expert.
Caravan insurance customers may be among those identified by travel journalist Russell Ameraskera who are choosing to stay closer to home.
The credit crunch is "biting very hard" on some people, the expert explained, stating that the pound's value against the euro has "discouraged" many from jetting off to foreign countries.
"We are seeing a real trend for people wanting to stay in the UK who want to do these shorter holidays and in particular city breaks," Mr Ameraskera remarked.
Many holidaymakers are now more aware that they do not need to travel long distances and instead they can drive to the UK's major cities in only a few hours, he added.
Andy Cressey, general manager of the Marton Mere caravan park in Blackpool, told the Blackpool Gazette this week that the number of visitors to the site has increased in the last year.
Mr Cressey suggested that the credit crunch was influencing the holiday choices being made by families.
Consequently, a large number are choosing to stay "closer to home", he said.
