Caravan owners gets assistance

New technology developed by car manufacturer Ford may help caravan insurance customers avoid accidental bumps and scrapes when attempting to hitch their caravan to their car.

The new Ford Kuga now features a tailgate-mounted camera that feeds images to a seven-inch colour display to show drivers any obstructions behind the vehicle that may not have been visible through mirrors.

A number of lines are superimposed on the image to show the width of the vehicle and to highlight the centre line to assist those lining up their towing hook with their caravan.

Joerg Luemmen, systems engineer at Ford, said: "Many customers lack confidence when manoeuvring in tight spaces or hitching a caravan to their vehicle."

The new system enables drivers to reverse "safely and accurately" by offering a "clear view" of the area directly behind the car, the expert added.

In related news, Audi recently announced the launch of its new Parallel Park Assist system for the new A3 Cabriolet.

The system uses a number of ultrasonic sensors that detect suitable spaces and then manoeuvres the vehicle into the space once the driver has engaged the reverse gear and touched the accelerator, Audi states.
