Insurance dodgers 'think they can get away with it'

People continue to take to the roads without motor insurance because they believe they can get away with it, according to one expert.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) estimated that one in 20 motorists on the UK's roads do not have insurance.

Caravan insurance customers could be among those affected by the trend, as the £500 million the problem is said to cost each year is "borne ultimately by the honest majority".

The spokesperson explained that there are a number of reasons people break the law by choosing not to take out insurance when they intend driving.

"Firstly, some people think they can get away with it. Historically the detection rate has been pretty low," he remarked.

"Penalties have been, and still to some extent remain, disproportionate to the crime," he added.

However, the credit crunch has not necessarily resulted in a larger number of uninsured drivers taking to the roads, as there were "plenty" of offenders before the economic downturn, the expert claimed.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, recently warned that the "net is tightening" on those who drive without insurance.
