UK holidays 'remain popular'

Holidays in the UK will continue to remain popular, according to an expert from the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

Derek Moore, chairman of the AITO, said that current economic conditions have not affected demand for weekend breaks among people in the UK, some of whom may be caravan insurance customers.

According to the expert, the UK's domestic tourism sector is "holding up quite a bit" as people look for short breaks.

"There will always be a market for domestic holidays and there are some great cities in the UK, great places to visit from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Liverpool and Manchester," Mr Moore commented.

"There are lots of great weekend opportunities as well," he added.

Figures published by VisitBritain in May revealed that UK residents made 11.9 million overnight trips within Britain in May this year, representing a seven per cent increase on the figure recorded during the corresponding month in 2007.

There were 9.7 million overnight trips in England alone during this period, which was ten per cent higher than a year earlier, the organisation noted.

Additionally, the number of nights and the amount spent on such trips increased by seven per cent and 18 per cent respectively.
