Winter caravan holidays 'proving popular'

Caravan holidays in the winter are "hugely popular", according to the Caravan Club.

A spokesperson for the club said that out of season caravan holidays are possible because there are now more than 70 Caravan Club sites open until the new year.

Caravan insurance customers may be interested to learn that a further 49 sites are actually open all year round.

The spokesperson said that many people tend to go caravanning at Christmas because it has become a "lifestyle".

"When the summer is over, it doesn't mean to say you need to pack up your caravan. You can still go away and discover some beautiful destinations in the UK," she remarked.

Caravanning is a "wonderful way" to spend Christmas and the new year as caravanners are a "very social group", she added.

According to the National Caravan Council there are approximately more than one million people in the UK who regularly take caravan holidays, while the Caravan Club alone has 800,000 members.

Presently 498,000 touring caravans are in use in Britain, while the country boasts a further 335,000 caravan holiday homes.

The council said that in 2007 sales of all types of caravan products were in a healthy state.
