Under-inflated tyres 'waste fuel'

Motorists are being warned that driving on under-inflated tyres can waste fuel and increase carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Drivers, including caravan insurance customers, should ensure all tyres are at the correct pressure, says campaigning group TyreSafe.

This will help keep running costs down as well as CO2 levels, it states.

Driving on tyres which are ten per cent under the recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by 2.5 per cent, meaning caravan insurance customers will not be able to travel as far afield for their money.

Checking tyre pressure is straightforward, yet many drivers do not take the time to do it, says TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis.

"By taking just a few minutes every month to check the pressure of each tyre and adjust it to the recommended level, significant improvements to road safety will be made and motorists could also save money through reducing fuel consumption," he comments.

Under-inflated tyres have a larger contact patch with the road, causing increased drag and places more load on the engine, which could mean the cars of caravan insurance customers do not perform as well when towing.

They will also wear out quicker, TyreSafe states, adding to the cost of motoring.

Last week the Institute of Advanced Motorists published a list of ways in which motorists can reduce their costs.

It said outlays, such as purchasing insurance, have increased by £277 on 2007.
