Sat nav warning issued by police

Caravan insurance customers who rely on their satellite navigation (sat nav) systems to get around have been urged to make sure they do not make their vehicles targets for thieves.

Greater Manchester police have reminded motorists not to leave their sat navs on display, following the theft of a dozen devices from cars in the Salford area in the last three weeks.

Fiona James, crime reduction adviser for the force's Salford Division, said people should remove their sat navs and other valuables from their cars when they leave them unattended.

"They should also remove the sat nav mounting cradle and wipe away any suction marks left on the windscreen or dashboard, as thieves will look out for these," Ms James recommended.

Drivers should also consider marking their valuables with their postcode and vehicle registration numbers, the expert stated.

Research by TomTom recently found that in the UK, 74 per cent of drivers with sat navs say they feel more in control when taking to the roads armed with the devices.

A further 55 per cent said using sat navs made them feel more alert, while 77 per cent said they tend to feel less stressed when driving.
