Poor caravan sales take their toll
The poor sales of caravans have prompted two firms to cut jobs, the GMB union has reported.
Cosalt Holiday Homes in east Hull is to cut 280 jobs, while Atlas Holiday Homes in west Hull has already reduced its workforce significantly, caravan insurance customers may be interested to learn.
Both companies blamed poor levels of orders for the move, while Cosalt announced earlier in the year that the economic climate and conditions within the caravan industry were affecting trade.
Ken Vincent, a GMB official in Hull, said: "The storm clouds of recession are blowing on Humberside.
"GMB was called to a surprise meeting with the firm's managers last week to discuss the situation. GMB was told that the company didn't have any orders beyond October 31."
The news comes in stark contrast to figures from the National Caravan Council for last year which showed that the number of motorhomes registered in the UK reached a record high of 11,646.
Meanwhile, sales of caravan holiday homes were found to have risen by 12 per cent to 23,150 and park homes sales increased by 15 per cent to more than 2,600.
In total, 69,000 leisure vehicles were sold in the UK over the course of last year, the council stated.
