Credit crunch 'benefiting domestic tourism'

The UK's tourism industry may be benefiting from the credit crunch, a number of experts have suggested.

Kelly Barnes, operations manager at BBC Tours, said that more people were choosing to spend their holidays in Britain.

The expert said that she had noticed the trend among her friends, who were now choosing to stay closer to home.

Meanwhile, James Anderson, tourism officer for Leeds city council and group representative for Leeds and Pennine Yorkshire, said the region - which is a popular destination for caravan insurance customers - is benefitting from the credit crunch.

People are "looking for a bit more value for money", Mr Anderson explained.

"I think people are far more interested in where they can go and what they can do in the UK. They are starting to discover the UK more, they want to learn what is on the doorstep now," he added.

The credit crunch is in fact helping to boost the domestic tourist industry, he added.

A recent United Kingdom Travel Survey found that there were 32.9 million overnight trips made in the UK by British residents between January and April this year.

Spending on these trips was four per cent higher than the corresponding period last year at £5.6 billion.
