Sat nav theft warning issued by police

Caravan insurance customers who rely on their satellite navigation systems (sat navs) to get around may want to follow the advice of Thames Valley police to make sure they do not become the victims of thieves.

The force is urging motorists to take simple steps to ensure they are not targeted by criminals.

Parking in well-lit areas and ensuring they lock doors and close windows may help to deter potential thieves, the police said, while drivers should also ensure keys are not left in the ignition when cars are unattended.

Kama Wager, crime reduction adviser for Aylesbury Vale, advised sat nav owners to keep their valuable devices out of sight so as not to tempt "opportunist" thieves.

"Ensure no valuables or cash are left on display, even if you are just leaving your car for a few minutes, that's all it takes for the thief to steal your sat nav, laptop or your handbag," the expert added.

The theft of sat navs may become more commonplace as their use increases.

Jenny Hodge, public relations manager for TomTom in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, recently said that such devices can help motorists cut down on the time they spend behind the wheel by reducing the number of miles they travel.
