12-year-old arrested over caravan death
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested after the body of a man was found in a burnt out caravan in Somerset.
Emergency services attended the blaze near Langport at 23:00 BST, just hours after putting out a nearby shed fire, and recovered the body of 50-year-old plumber George Hoare.
The boy was arrested in connection with the incident on Saturday but later released on police bail.
Mr Hoare was a regular at the Halfway House pub, and assistant manager Jack Newton said: "It's a terrible thing to have happened."
"I have known George for 15 to 16 years and he was a man who kept himself to himself, but he was always helpful and happy on his smallholding," he said.
Avon and Somerset police confirmed that they are treating the death as suspicious, and the area surrounding the caravan is still being carefully examined by forensic officers to discover how the fire started.
The blaze is the latest in a spate of fires that will concern caravan insurance customers, after another man was killed and one injured in a similar incident in Kent earlier this month.
Owners will also be reminded that taking out caravan insurance should not alleviate the need to ensure that smoke alarms and other preventative measures are fitted to help avoid such tragic accidents.
