Caravan owners warned to lock up

Caravan owners no longer using their mobile homes are being warned to check their property is securely locked up.

Opportunistic thieves often target the vehicles as the summer comes to an end, the Norwich Evening News reports, as owners leave them unattended during the winter and the darker evenings set in.

As well as ensuring their caravan insurance policy is up to date, those parking their vehicle on a site or in their driveways should make certain that it is security marked and invest in a set of quality wheel clamps to ensure it stays put.

Valuables and contents should be removed from the van, and cupboard doors and curtains left open to let potential thieves know that it is empty, advised Norfolk Constabulary spokesperson Jon Ford.

"A lot of caravan crime is the result of criminals seeing opportunities and taking them. But you can easily outsmart the thief by following the simple advice," he said.

The warning comes after a holiday season in which a man in North Norfolk committed 80 offences of theft, including numerous caravan break-ins, over a four-month period.

Geoffrey Cave, 55, was eventually thwarted after a week-long hunt involving up to 70 police personnel, much to the relief of caravan insurance providers across the region.
