Road users 'need refreshing' on Highway Code
More than half of UK motorists do not know the meaning of the simplest road signs, caravan insurance customers may be concerned to discover.
Fifty-three per cent of those questioned in a survey by Avis Rent A Car failed to identify the correct meaning of simple signs like "No Waiting" and "No Cycling", increasing the likelihood of accidents and insurance claims occurring on Britain's roads.
Daniel McCarthy, commercial director of Avis UK, said the company had initially carried out the research to identify those foreign road signs that posed most problems for UK drivers and caravan users abroad.
But with one in five drivers of the belief that the "No Overtaking" sign referred to a dual carriageway up ahead, Mr McCarthy suggested that road users would be well advised to "refresh their knowledge" of the Highway Code.
Meanwhile, caravan insurance holders looking to make the most of their mobile home on roads across Europe will welcome Avis's work with British Airways to produce a driving guide for popular overseas destinations.
The guides offer advice to motorists on speed limits, road signs and legislation in specific countries across the globe.
Those looking to hit the roads may be also interested to learn the winner of the Practical Caravan Magazine's Tourer of the Year 2009 title, which went to the Bailey Ranger GT60 540/6 series.
