Caravan sales soar as credit crunch hits

Holidaymakers rapped by the credit crunch are choosing caravan holidays over going abroad.

The number of people seeking caravan insurance in Northamptonshire has seen a sharp rise as second-hand caravan sales in the area have soared, according to the Northants Evening News.

One firm in the region saw its annual sales figures almost doubled as consumers opted for UK holidays over more expensive long-haul and European flights.

And Andrew Scott, managing director of the Caravan Company, said that people are buying caravans as they seek to guarantee "unlimited holidays for the next few years".

"Many second hand caravans are around the same price as a family holiday abroad, with a reasonable model selling for around £3,000," he said.

The boom in second hand trade means that the number of new owners taking out caravan insurance is likely to rise, despite the fall in the number of new caravans being sold.

And buyers looking to purchase mobile homes will be reminded of the need for cover by the recent spate of arson attacks across the UK.

Fire services were called to a blaze at a caravan in the Norfolk area last night, the Norwich Evening News reports, while two men have been killed already this month in separate incidents of caravan fires.
