HA shares traffic data with Google

It may soon be easier for caravan insurance customers to plan their journeys in advance following a data-sharing agreement between the Highways Agency (HA) and Google.

The HA is making its traffic information available to Google for use in the new Google Maps traffic application, which is intended to provide motorists with real-time traffic updates.

Google's new service shows average speeds on motorways and major roads in England on the existing Google Map application to show the speed of traffic.

Denise Plumpton, director information at the HA, said the body is "delighted" to be the first in Europe to work with Google to provide assistance to motorists across the country.

"This sort of project is a key part of our information strategy aimed at getting traffic information out to motorists where and when they need it," Ms Plumpton added.

Caravan insurance customers may be among those already benefiting from an agreement with the BBC under which internet users can access information from the HA's cameras to check road conditions before they set off.

At the British International Motor Show earlier this year, HA staff demonstrated how its technology keeps the country's road network moving and drivers up to date with traffic information.
