A firm in Hull has been named as the UK's best caravan manufacturer.

Willerby Holiday Homes in Hedon Road could be set for a rise in popularity among caravan insurance customers in the market for a new model after the company landed the Manufacturer magazine's Manufacturer of the Year award at a ceremony in London, reports the Hull Daily Mail.

Judges made the award on account of the "world-class" quality of the firm's whole operation, said Nick Hussey, chief executive officer of Say One Media, which publishes The Manufacturer.

Mano Jamieson, HR manager at Willerby Holiday Homes, said the award offered recognition for the progress the company had made in recent years.

"The caravan industry has been somewhat of a cottage industry in east Yorkshire, but over the past few years we have been making big strides," he enthused.

Despite the award, figures released earlier this week suggest that many buyers are turning to used models over brand new purchases, with sales of second-hand caravans on the rise according to the Northants Evening News.

The report put the soar in sales down to the number of Brits seeking cheaper holiday alternatives as the credit crunch begins to take effect on consumers.
