Residents warned against Hanoi burglaries

Car and caravan insurance customers in West Yorkshire are being given advice to prevent them from becoming victims of Hanoi-style burglaries.

Morley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officers are visiting 40 properties on an estate in the region to issue security advice designed to protect against thieves entering a victim's home to take car or caravan keys, before making off with the vehicle or stealing items from within it.

Residents will be provided with free crime prevention packs, which include specialist equipment for marking property as well as security upgrades for doors and windows.

Inspector Joanne O'Hare, who leads the Morley NPT, explained that officers hoped the scheme would help "raise awareness" of Hanoi burglaries, which often take place in estates and villages with strong links to main road networks.

The initiative is being led by Keith Pabe MBE, Morley NPT's crime reduction officer, and he said that Hanoi burglaries could be "very distressing" for victims.

"Thieves enter their homes and take their pride and joy and drive off before they can do anything about it," he warned.

Mr Pabe added that residents should be "vigilant" and "report suspicious circumstances" to help combat the crimes.

The warning comes just one week after the Swindon Advertiser reported that nine people had been arrested by police in connection with millions of pounds worth of caravan thefts in the area.
