"Quick-thinking" motorist douses camper van fire

A motorist who came to the aid of one caravan insurance customer in Bedford has been nominated for an award.

The driver was alerted when he spotted a camper van that had burst into flames on Grasmere Road early on Wednesday morning.

He quickly turned his car around, reports the Croydon Advertiser, before rushing to his nearby home and returning with a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.

Watch manager Sally Coxon of Woodside fire station hailed the man for averting a potential disaster, adding that the caravan could have "taken half the street away" if the fire had reached its gas cooking cylinder.

"If we thought we had a cylinder fire on our hands it would have meant evacuating homes and all sorts," she said.

"Luckily, because he had been so quick thinking it hadn't spread to the cylinder which wasn't even warm," Miss Coxon added.
