New Ecostream is 'stylish and environmentally friendly'

Caravan insurance customers can do their bit for the environment and still holiday in style with the new Ecostream vehicle, a report suggests.

Recently showcased at the International Caravan and Motorhome Show in Birmingham, the model features a wide array of green and energy saving devices to help reduce its impact on the environment, the Times reports.

The Ecostream was first proposed by former Top Gear presenter Steve Berry, who overhauled a standard Airstream caravan and added a wood-burning stove and solar panels as well as a host of recycled materials.

Sufficient energy is supplied by the panels to power the master control unit as well as the eco-ICE - "in-caravan entertainment" - and heat, hot water and cooking facilities are provided by the stove.

The caravan also features a shower unit crafted out of a Harley-Davidson motorbike's fuel tank and furniture made from recycled shampoo bottles, mobile phone covers and yoghurt pots.

Although still a demonstration model, Mr Berry said that the Ecostream would allow caravan insurance customers to "take it to the remotest places and be self-sufficient".

"This kind of experiment can show us a way towards caravans that tread more lightly on the planet," added Airstream chief executive Bob Wheeler.

The Ecostream could prove popular with UK holidaymakers, with research by the Caravan Club last week revealing that 98 per cent of its members claimed to do something every day to help the environment.
