Exploding TV ignites caravan blaze
Caravan insurance customers have again been warned of the potential perils after a mobile home in a Peterborough campsite was destroyed by fire.
Two 18-year-olds escaped with minor burns after their television set exploded, setting the caravan in which they were sleeping alight and filling it with thick smoke, the Peterborough Evening Telegraph reports.
Police say that one man was woken by the inferno and successfully dragged the second to safety, and fire chiefs said his bravery had been "admirable".
However, authorities advised that the dangers could have been averted if the caravan had been fitted with a working fire alarm.
Steve Duffy, watch manager at Peterborough's Dogsthorpe fire station, said: "The caravan didn't have a smoke alarm. If it had, they would have escaped without suffering any smoke inhalation and would have escaped much sooner."
The fire crew later paid a second visit to the caravan park, issuing free fire alarms and reminding caravan insurance customers of the importance of safe holidaying.
Meanwhile, a caravan fire in Lancashire last night saw an emergency cordon drawn 100 metres around the mobile home, which burst into flames at junction three of the M65.
The vehicle was carrying acetone cylinders and the road is set to remain closed until later on this evening.
