Holidaymakers 'must keep an eye on their children'

Caravan owners who enjoy UK breaks with their children are being warned not to rely on technology over close supervision to keep the youngsters safe.

Camping and motorhome holidays offer a fun and cheaper alternative to foreign package trips, enabling families to make the most of their caravan insurance and experience some of Britain's top tourist destinations.

But Nancy McBride, safety director at the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, urged parents and guardians to monitor their children carefully in unknown places to avoid holiday heartache.

Despite the recent innovation of new child tracking systems designed to monitor two to 12-year-olds, Miss McBride warned that technology was no substitute for "appropriate supervision".

"No device will keep a child safe and prevent abductions; that can only be achieved through the parents' or guardians' supervision and attention to their children," she said.

Miss McBride added that caravan insurance customers should also ensure that their children have an understanding of "basic safety rules".

Holidaymakers planning a family getaway were informed last week of a new "totnav" system that could help keep children entertained during the journey.

The device offers commentary and advice on child-friendly locations along the way, and can be downloaded to current satellite navigation systems at a cost of £9.95.
