Firefighters tackle caravan blaze
Caravan insurance customers were again reminded of the hazards involved in a motor home holiday after a blaze in Swindon.
Four teams of firefighters battled for three hours to douse the flames in the early hours of the morning last Friday, with backup called in to help deal with the fire.
Fortunately, there was no one inside the static caravan at Blunsdon Abbey Park when the fire broke out, and officials are still unsure as to how the inferno began.
Camping breaks in the UK are becoming increasingly popular as the credit crunch hits family spending and reduces the number of holidaymakers flying abroad, but owners should ensure that precautions are taken to ensure a safe getaway.
As well as taking out full caravan insurance cover to help cushion the financial blow of any accident or damage to their vehicle, campers should ensure a fully working fire alarm is installed and tested regularly.
Indeed, officers from Peterborough's Dogsthorpe fire station visited a caravan park in the region last week issuing free alarms to mobile home owners, according to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
The move followed after the force had extinguished a caravan fire on the site caused by an exploding television set, from which two teenagers escaped largely unharmed.
