Motorists warned to keep sat navs out of sight
Caravan insurance customers who use satellite navigation systems to plot their routes are being warned to remove the devices from sight when they leave their vehicles.
Merseyside Police have reported a series of incidents in which valuables including ipods and mobile phones have been taken from parked cars - and sat navs are amongst the most popular items for thieves to target.
Officers are warning motorists to lock up their cars and to avoid leaving any belongings on show in unattended vehicles.
Crime reduction officer Michelle Harrison said she "could not stress enough" the importance of taking precautions - and advised that even placing items in glove boxes and boots would not keep them safe from thieves.
She also urged drivers to "use a steering lock where possible" to avoid giving opportunistic thieves an easy ride.
Many caravan insurance customers make use of sat navs as they travel the UK on summer and winter breaks, meaning they may be particularly quick to heed the advice.
According to research by TomTom, sat nav systems can help reduce travelling time to an unknown destination by as much as 18 per cent, as well as reducing the amount of miles driven.
