Margaret Becket overlooked for caravan brief

Politician and mobile home aficionado Margaret Beckett has been snubbed by the Department for Communities and Local Government for a role dealing with static caravans.

A well-publicised supporter of the lifestyle enjoyed by many caravan insurance customers, Mrs Beckett has written with great enthusiasm about the "spontaneity" of holidaying in the UK, the Daily Telegraph reports.

However, having returned to government in last month's reshuffle as housing minister, she appears to have been overlooked for official responsibility for immobile or static caravans after the release of detailed ministerial portfolios by Whitehall.

Instead, the newspaper believes that Iain Wright - who is already responsible for climate change, sustainable development and building regulations - will take charge of the issues.

A Tory source said: "This looks like a snub. Surely it cannot be because Margaret Beckett is thought to have a conflict of interest?"

Two years ago, Mrs Beckett refused to give up her usual caravan holiday with her husband in light of security concerns due to her role at the time as foreign secretary.

Instead, the couple were accompanied by a team of bodyguards as they made their way around the south of France.

"There was a rumour that we'd be forced to give it up for good, but I wouldn't stop for the world," her husband said at the time.
